Although today all GLoNY Masonic lodges in Manhattan meet at the Grand Lodge Building, this was not always the case and is likely a consequence of the high property taxes in New York City. One former Masonic lodge at 15th Street, home to a number of German-speaking Masonic lodges, is now in use by Friend's Seminary. In addition the Prince Hall Masonic Temple first served as the Masonic Temple for the William McKinley Lodge. Additional lodges were chartered in New York by the Grand Lodge of Scotland and the Grand Lodge of Ireland.
The Ancients retained their charter throughout the Revolution, however, and it was based upon this charter that an independent Grand Lodge of New York was created in 1781, with Robert R. Livingston as Grand Master. The Grand Lodge of New York was officially organized on December 15, 1782, under the Provincial Grand Warrant dated September 5, 1781, from the “Athol” or Antient Grand Lodge of England. The Grand Lodge declared its independence and assumed its modern title “Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York” on June 6, 1787. While the "Athol" Charter descended from the "Ancients", Livingston himself was a member of a "Modern" Lodge.

There were other financial challenges, as reported by Curbed. He added that the city agency believed that the building was vacant, and that the Tents hadn’t proved that they would use the property for tax-exempt purposes in the foreseeable future. And despite the water damage, boarded up windows and crumbling plaster, it was just possible to imagine the mysterious building as it once was.
Now the number stands at 24 — and there are Tents as young as 25. Ms. Gregory, a military veteran originally from South Carolina, has been a member since 1997. That year, she witnessed the Tents perform a secret ritual, which she declined to describe. But, she said with a smirk, “I was curious.” She asked to join and soon found she was one of the youngest women in the group. On a brisk morning in November, bright yellow leaves from a huge ginkgo tree scattered onto the front yard of 87 MacDonough Street.

The current Grand Lodge building is located at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan and was built in 1911. Early Masonic meetings were likely held at taverns as well as an early iteration of Tammany Hall. On June 24, 1826 the cornerstone was laid for a Gothic style Masonic Hall on Broadway in lower Manhattan. In 1870, the cornerstone was laid for a new Second French Empire Style building which served as the headquarters of the Grand Lodge from 1875 to 1911 and was located at the same 23rd Street site as the current Grand Lodge building. This 1875 Grand Lodge building was designed by Napoleon LeBrun and due to the Panic of 1873 it would take five years to complete, at the staggering cost of $1.279 million dollars. By the turn of the 20th Century, the Second Empire style was already considered outdated and coupled with rising NYC real estate prices, the 1875 temple was replaced with the current more modern skyscraper.
Thus the two rival Grand Lodge traditions, which in England did not unite until 1813, had already merged before that in New York State. Built in 1863 for a brewer named William Parker, the house originally sat on a large lot with a carriage house. The second owner of the mansion was James McMahon, the president of Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank. The Tents held springtime events in the yard, grew vegetables in the garden, and tended to sick, old and poor women. There were Thanksgiving dinners for the community and toy drives for Christmas. But as the years passed, the group’s members aged and passed on. A two-story foyer welcomes visitors into the space, with a home office on one side and the living room on the other. The roomy office offers skylights and large windows looking out to the street, as does the living room, which features a vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.
